LNG by Rail: deal between Skangass and VTG

On May 7, VTG,  a major European wagon hire and rail logistics company, signed the first hire contract with the option to order LNG rail tank wagons with the Nordic company Skangass AS at the fair „transport logistic“ in Munich. „We are very happy that we were able to sign a first hire contract for LNG rail tank wagons right after the unveiling and first presentation of the wagon,” said Dr. Heiko Fischer, CEO of VTG Aktiengesellschaft. “This confirms our commitment for the transport of the promising and eco-friendly energy source LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) by rail.” “This cooperation with VTG is a great opportunity for us to shift a big part of our actual transports of LNG from road to rail,” said Tor Morten Osmundsen, CEO of Skangass AS, Norway. “As well this gives us the chance to meet the increasing demand for LNG in an efficient and eco-friendly way.” The agreement with Skangass AS includes the long term hiring of up to 20 LNG rail tank wagons. Approx.1.500 cubic meter of LNG is transported per trip. The contract is probably not a game changer for Skangass, as the company is involved in several LNG project and it has recently celebrated its LNG terminal in Finland. However, it indicates the potential application for LNG in an area, the Baltic, where the resource is rapidly growing in importance. Source: VTG Press Release
