First cargo ship refueled liquefied natural gas at the Port of Cartagena

The Danish freighter Kvitbjorn has become the first large cargo ship that has received natural gas as fuel in the Port of Cartagena. The Kvitbjorn is the largest ship of its kind so far has made stops in Spain, although it is the third time that this type of operation is performed in Cartagena. The ship, which arrived at the Port last March 13, flagged in the Faroe Islands, and its dimensions are 112 meters long, 21 meters wide and 9,132 GT. It is powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), and is the first ship of this type which stops in Cartagena for gas supply. The fuel was supplied by Repsol, whose technicians were in charge of the operation, and received a total of 136 tons of LNG supplied by 7 tankers. The boat can accommodate up to400 cubic meters of gas in their tanks. In February and May last year two supply operations were done to two Norwegian tugboats, which performed the way from Turkey to Norway, although the quantities of gas supplied were lower. The Port of Cartagena was the first in Spain to have a regulation approved for LNG supply from tanker ships.
