The Finnish shipping company Containerships (CMA CGM Group) announced that its first LNG-powered container ship, M/S Containerships Nord, has successfully completed its first LNG supply in the port of Rotterdam on January 24, 2019, carried out by Shell from ship to ship via the Cardissa vessel bunker.
Approximately 240 tonnes of LNG were supplied to the ship, sufficient to support a round trip from Rotterdam to Saint Petersburg, sailing twice through the Kiel Canal, which connects the North Sea with the Baltic Sea, avoiding the circumnavigation of the Jutland peninsula.
The 1,400 TEU container ship was built by the Wenchong Shipyard in China and delivered in December 2018, while three other sister ships (M/S Containerships Strom, M/S Containerships Finn and M/S Containerships Balt) already christened in China are scheduled for delivery in the first half of 2019. Containerships aims to create a complete door-to-door transport chain based on LNG in Europe, with investments in ships and trucks all powered by LNG.
CMA CGM, the French parent company of Containerships (which completed its acquisition on October 22, 2018, after the go-ahead issued by the European Commission) is also engaged in LNG technology, with its own order backlog of nine 22,000 TEU container ships ordered to China State Shipbuilding Corporation, which will be delivered from 2020. Collectively, the two companies will be able to count on 13 new LNG-powered container ships that will be delivered between 2019 and 2020.
Temporarily the vessel Containerships Nord will replace a CMA CGM vessel on the route Newdruks (Saint Petersburg - Hamburg Rotterdam - Antwerp - Dukerque - Portsmouth - Le Havre - Vigo - Tangier - Cabblanca - Agadir). Later the container ship will return to service on the route between the main ports of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea.
