Shell starts new project on BioLNG

In order to ensure the availability of BioLNG at its distribution stations, Shell has announced the construction of a production site in Germany, which is expected to be undertaken by spring 2021.

Shell's future liquefaction plant should be built at its Godorf refinery (near Cologne, in the Rhineland) and will have an annual production capacity of around 100,000 tons. It will be able to receive bio-methane of controlled origin directly from the gas distribution network; the green LNG will be distributed through tankers in the various road distribution stations as fuel for heavy vehicles.

Shell, which already has around forty LNG stations on the European continent, plans to expand its network in Germany; it is also expected to inaugurate its first LNG station in eastern France by next summer, in Mionnay, a town in the Ain department (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region).

"This step demonstrates the seriousness of our commitment in helping to support the Paris Agreement on climate protection " said Dr. Fabian Ziegler, country manager of Shell in Germany adding "This includes the reduction of net CO2 emissions of energy products sold by Shell by around 30% by 2035 and by around 65% by 2050. LNG technology is mature, available and competitive and we want to do it now ".
