Friday 26 of July 2019, Spanish shipping company Baleària' second LNG-fuelled newbuild ferry Marie Curie has started operations on the route Valencia-Ibiza-Palma.

Marie Curie, built at the Italian Cantiere Navale Visentini shipyard, follows its sister vessel Hypatia de Alejandria that started operations earlier this year. Baleària has invested €200 million ($223.4 million) in the construction of the pair of LNG ferries.

Both of the ships are 186.5 meters long with a maximum speed of 24 knots and the capacity for 880 people, 2,194 linear meters of cargo and 166 vehicles.

Currently, Baleària has four ferries with dual engines that can be fueled by LNG, two of them newly built, and two other re-motorized, while four other re-motorizations will be added until 2021.

In addition, the world’s first fast ferry powered by LNG engines, Eleanor Roosevelt, is planned to start operations in 2020. Overall, the present fleet plan of Baleària provides a total of 9 smart ships to LNG in 2021.
