New trucks from Volvo running on gas

The Swedish company has presented the new Euro 6 FH LNG tractor fueled with liquid natural gas, available in 420 and 460 hp models for medium and long haul transport, respectively at the  Ecomondo fair 7-10 November last in Rimini (Italy). Unlike the Otto cycle solution used by other manufacturers for  LNG engines, the Gothenburg’s factory has opted for diesel-powered technology for its 13-liter, 420 and 460-horsepower units. Therefore, the two models will be able to maintain the same maximum torque (2,100 Nm and 2,300 Nm respectively) obtained with the corresponding diesel engines, along with the same drivability and reliability. Along with the LNG models, Volvo has also presented similar FM LNG biogas fuelled vehicles, with significantly lower CO2 emissions; when also biodiesel (HVO) is used emissions may drop by up to 100 per cent. Sales of new FH LNG and FM LNG vehicles will start next spring, unfortunately close to  the deadline of  April 15 2018 for incentives available for the purchase of road haulers under the Decree of 19 July 2016 (see GU General Series n .216 of 15-09-2019), except in the case of a  possible extension: it is 20,000 Euros for each liquefied natural gas vehicle (LNG) or twin natural gas compressed and liquefied natural gas (C-LNG). Volvo Trucks’ new FH LNG has received Italy’s Sustainable Truck of the Year 2018 award, at a ceremony in connection with the Ecomondo exhibition, winning the first prize in the “tractor” category, sponsored by “ Vado e Torno”, one of the foremost truck magazines in Italy, in cooperation with Italian university “Politecnico di Milano”. The main emphasis is on the trucks’ high energy efficiency and low climate impact, but also other parameters were considered, such as safety, comfort and recyclability.
