NYK orders 12 new LNG ships for auto transport

Japan's Nippon Yusen (NYK) has ordered 12 new LNG-powered auto cargo ships worth a total of 100 billion yen (752 million euros), the largest order of its kind ever placed in Japan.

Nippon Yusen will allocate the new units to the transport of automobiles, at a time when car manufacturers are also aiming to significantly cut their environmental impact. Out of 700 ships carrying cars around the world, only 10 are currently powered by LNG.

The new ships will be built by Shin Kurushima and Nihon Shipyard, the latter a joint venture of Imabari Shipbuilding and Japan Marine United. Each of the two shipyards will build six ships.

Nippo Yusen owns a fleet of 120 car transport vessels, only one is LNG-powered. By 2028, it aims to reach 20.
