The naval cruising company Royal Caribbean has announced, through its brand Silversea Cruises, that in 2023 the first fleet of hybrid ships will be set for sail. The new ships are part of the “Project Evolution”, and they will be fuelled through the combination of three different solutions: fuel cells, technologically advanced batteries and dual engines which will use LNG as the main fuel.
As declared by Royal Caribbean’s Ceo, Richard Fain, the new class of Silversea ships marks a significative step towards the reduction of the company’s carbon footprint. The fuel cells technology gives the possibility to satisfy all the energetic needs of the ship in port, achieving an astounding 40% reduction of Green House Gases emissions while guaranteeing a better energetic efficiency if compared with other more traditional ships. Roberto Martinoli, President and Ceo of Silversea Cruises was fully satisfied by the efforts of the company to design technologically innovative ships in line with the environmental regulations.
“Project Evolution”, created with the cooperation of Meyer Werft Shipyard, includes among other things: the new fuel cells systems, the use of LNG as the main fuel, battery charged system to reduce consumes and increase efficiency, “waste to energy” systems and the use of carbon neutral solutions.
