As part of the framework agreement signed in 2018 between IP (Italiana Petroli, API Group, with 5000 filling station in Italy) and Snam (Italian gas TSO) to build up to 200 new natural gas supply stations in Italy, the two companies finalized a first project involving two LNG and L-CNG stations, one in Veneto and one in Emilia Romagna, and another 24 with only compressed methane.
The joint press release of the companies specifies that the 26 refueling points will open on the network of IP distributors starting in 2020 throughout Italy, mostly along motorways. For IP, the expansion in the LNG and CNG sector represents a concrete contribution to the construction of the infrastructure necessary for the transition of Italy towards sustainable mobility. The investment in new LNG stations, particular, represents an important step for the nascent supply network to support heavy gas transportation.
The agreement with IP is part of the initiatives of Snam4Mobility, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Snam, which provides for the overall construction of around 300 new CNG and LNG stations in the coming years. In its strategic plan to 2022, as part of the Snamtec project focused on innovation and energy transition, Snam is planning investments for a total of 200 million euros in the construction of natural gas and biomethane distributors. Snam4Mobility operates with the recently acquired subsidiaries Cubogas, IES Biogas and Enersi Sicilia.
