MSC Group and Onorato Armatori purchase four LNG Ready RO-Pax in China

The two shipping groups MSC and Onorato Armatori, on last 11 February u.s. signed the order for the overall construction of four LNG-equipped Ro-Pax ferries at the two shipbuilders Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) and China Shipbuilding Trading Co. (CSTC), both belonging to the Chinese Industrial Conglomerate China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC)

The contract involves 230-meter Ro-Pax ferries with high standards of comfort, equipped with 536 cabins and capable of transporting up to 2,500 passengers and over 3,700 linear meters of rolling cargo, which will be equipped with LNG-ready systems for propulsion with liquefied natural gas as fuel, capable of sailing at a maximum speed of 2.5 knots.

The first ship (to be delivered in 2020) and the third unit of the series will be delivered to Grandi Navi Veloci (GNV), the subsidiary company of the MSC group of the Aponte family.

The second one (whose delivery is scheduled for April 2021) and the fourth vessel will be destined instead to Onorato Group (Moby/Tirrenia CIN).

The contract also provides for each of the two shipping groups the opportunity to exercise the option for the further construction of another 2 Ro-Pax twin units.

At the signing ceremony, which was held in Beijing at the headquarters of CSSC, were present Dong Qiang President of the CSSC shipbuilding group, Pierfrancesco Vago representing the MSC Group, Achille Onorato for Onorato Armatori and Matteo Catani, Managing Director of Grandi Navi Veloci.

Achille Onorato, who commented the agreement: "Our new step towards innovative ships with low environmental impact demonstrates our commitment to offer an ever better transport service for goods and people in the Mediterranean".
