In Germany, the companies Liqvis GmbH ( a subsidiary of the Uniper group founded in 2015) and Echo Tankstellen GmbH (operator of the Esso brand station network) have formed an alliance -subject to approval by the regulatory authorities - to promote the construction of new liquefied natural gas (LNG) refueling stations in the Federal Republic of Germany.
The first LNG station for heavy commercial vehicles, currently in the planning phase, will be built at the Esso fuel point in Seligweiler near Ulm, managed by Hotel & Rasthaus Seligweiler GmbH & Co KG. The new joint venture plans to evaluate the feasibility of additional LNG refueling stations in other sites in agreement with local authorities.
While the Echo network currently includes around 1,000 service stations operating under the Esso brand, Liqvis for its part already manages an LNG station in Berlin Grünheide (open to the public since November 2018) and plans to arrive at six LNG stations by the end. 2020 with five other new stations in Kassel-Lohfelden, Rosengarten/Hamburg, Langenhagen/Hannover, Bönen and Calais (in northern France), to which will be added in 2021 the Ulm Seligweiler refueling station, currently in the planning phase together with Echo.
Silvano Calcagno, CEO of Liqvis GmbH, said: "We are delighted to have found a strong partner like Echo Tankstellen GmbH, with whom we can work together to further promote LNG fuel in Germany as a greener alternative to conventional diesel and petrol. The service area of Ulm Seligweiler is an ideal site because it is located near the A9 motorway widely used by heavy vehicles.”
