At the Sefine Shipyard in Yalova, Turkey, construction began on the LNG ferry “Aeolian” ordered last March by Caronte & Tourist Isole Minori (Caronte & Tourist shipowner group). The Group, the absolute pioneer in Italy of LNG maritime transport, already has the LNG ferry "Elio" operating in the Strait of Messina. Elio, active since November 2019, has so far not been able to use the new ecological fuel continuously due to the unavailability of refueling facilities.
In addition to the possible diesel fuel backup, the new ship will be equipped with a 1,000 kW battery pack and 250 square meters of solar panels, which will allow to increase the electrical capacity and be able to operate with the engines off during stops in the ports. Wartsila will supply the main (two 2,900 kW 34DF) and auxiliary (two 1,300 kW 20DF) engines, as well as the fuel storage and refueling system. Two 800 kW bow thrusters will improve maneuverability in small island ports.
The new ferry will be delivered to the shipowner by 2023. It is a ro-pax of approximately 8,300 gross tons, designed by the Trieste-based NAOS Ship and Boat Design. She will be 109 meters long, 19.5 meters wide and will connect Milazzo, on the north-eastern coast of Sicily, with the Aeolian Islands, continuing towards the continental port of Naples on certain days of the week. You will operate under the Siremar brand (formerly Sicily Regional Maritime, taken over by the Caronte & Tourist Group).
Between passengers and crew, the ship will be able to accommodate up to 800 people. In the garage it will be possible to park vehicles up to 5 meters high while the aft part will be open for the stowage of dangerous loads and accessible via a stern ramp 10 mx 10 m wide, with a maximum stowage of 420 linear meters of rolling cargo or 114 cars. . Also available are 18 four-berth passenger cabins and two twin-berth cabins for passengers with reduced mobility.
