Spain’s port of Algeciras, situated in the Cadice province and main Spanish port for freight and passenger traffic volume, is bound to become an international LNG hub. As a matter of fact, the Spanish Port Authority just launched the LNGhive2 project, which aims at building in the harbour area the infrastructures necessary for LNG fuelled vessels, thus promoting the development of alternative fuels capable of decreasing the environmental impact of maritime transport whilst increasing its decarbonisation process.
At a recent conference, the president of the Ports of State, Francisco Toledo, presented a ship for refueling and bunkering of liquefied natural gas. The ship, with a capacity of 12,500 m3, was built thanks to subsidies made available by the European Union, for a total amount of 11 million euros and will be procured at the Enagás plant in Huelva, located in the autonomous community of Andalusia.
The project needs to be reviewed through the lenses of the decarbonisation goals of the maritime sector, which were recently reinforced by the 2030 Agenda of the World Network of Port Cities (AIVP) and by the APBA, Call to action for Shipping Decarbonisation, which aims at the complete decarbonisation of the shipping sector before 2050.
