Galp conducts first LNG ship refueling in Portugal

Portuguese company Galp announced that it has completed this week, at the port of Funchal in Madeira, the first ever LNG vessel refueling conducted at a Portuguese port or any Atlantic island.

The operation involved the refuelling of the ‘AIDAprima’, an environmentally friendly cruise ship and the first LNG-powered cruise liner.

Galp is new capable of refueling vessels with LNG at any port of mainland Portugal and islands and will soon be able provide ship-to-ship refueling. Through these projects, Galp offers clients and partners innovative energy solutions that significant-ly reduce their emissions, anticipating trends that will become mainstream in the future.

The LNG that the company used in this operation is transported through cryogenic cistern containers, a solution that maintains the gas in liquid state at very low temperatures, facilitating its safe transport. The amount of LNG that was provided to the ship is equal to the average daily consumption of 42.000 households.

In Madeira, this logistics replicates a virtual pipeline that supplies the thermal power plant of Vitória.

Galp’s partner in this operation is Gaslink, a Groupo Sousa unit that runs the LNG transportation and supply logistics between Portugal’s mainland and the port of Funchal.
