Terntank’s LNG-powered chemical tanker Ternsund will be the first vessel to receive a discount on gross seaport dues in the Port of Rotterdam as part of the port’s new incentive programme. The Dutch port announced in December last year that seagoing vessels bunkering the chilled fuel in the port will receive a 10 percent discount on port dues as it aims to boost LNG bunkering in Rotterdam.
In addition to the new incentive, the port authority supports the Environmental Ship Index (ESI) and the Green Award, which identifies seagoing ships that perform better in reducing air emissions (SO2, NOx) than required by the current emission standards of the International Maritime, by providing 1.5-2 million euros in incentives.
Swedish tanker owner Terntank has recently taken the delivery of the Ternsund from China’s Avic Dingheng Shipbuilding Co. The LNG-powered tanker is expected to arrive in the Port of Rotterdam around Monday, August 8. According to the Port of Rotterdam, the LNG bunkering operations will go on for three days as the tanker is currently sailing on diesel and its LNG tanks need to be cooled prior to taking the chilled fuel.
The Ternsund is the first vessel in a series of four 15,000 DWT chemical tankers the Chinese shipyard is building for Terntank. All of the vessels will be equipped with dual-fuel engines, meaning they can run either on LNG or diesel marine, provided by Wärtsilä. Once ready, the vessel will enter a time charter with Finnish North European Oil Trade (NEOT) to distribute refined oil products from the company’s refinery in Gothenburg, Sweden.
