The Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Housing of the Community of Madrid, Pablo Cavero, and the Mayor of Leganés, Jesus Gomez Ruiz, last week presented 14 new intercity buses powered by natural gas to provide services south of the city. At the presentation the Minister of Transport, Pablo Cavero, stressed “the benefits to the environment from having these models, allowing reductions of up to 75% nitrogen oxide emissions, 20% particulate emissions and 50% noise. Public transport plays a fundamental role in air quality and, in this sense, the regional government is making a major commitment in collaboration with companies in the sector.”
The buses, operating under the Consortium Regional Transportes de Madrid (CRTM), will join the fleet of Empresa Martin SA, part of the Ruiz Group. The low-entry buses have Scania Euro 6 gas powered engines and Castrosua bodywork, built to Magnus E + LE (10.8 and 12.8 meter) model specifications. The engine delivers 280 hp and 1,350 Nm of torque.
Empresa Martin’s fleet is 50% natural gas powered. The newly released units serve lines 481, which connects the capital with Parquesur and the Hospital of Leganés, and 486, which connects Madrid with neighborhood Valdepelayo also Leganesboth of which carry over 6,000 passengers daily.
CRTM has renewed in the past four years a total of 984 buses of the 2,000 vehicles forming the current intercity fleet and logging more than 600,000 daily users.
The mayor of Leganés, Jesús Gómez, expressed appreciation for the ecological specifications of the buses, recognising the benefits of reduced emissions and noise especially for inner city environments.
