With the unloading of fuel into the tanks, the technical tests of the LNG plant that will serve the decarbonisation of heavy and maritime transport begin.
Edison has successfully started the first technical test of filling with liquefied natural gas (LNG) the Small Scale coastal depot in Ravenna, owned by Depositi Italiani GNL, DIG (51% Pir, 30% Edison, 19% Scale Gas). After having picked up the first load of liquefied natural gas at the Enagàs plant in Barcelona, Edison's tanker Ravenna Knutsen disembarked at the Ravenna dock, thus starting the controlled loading operations of the two tanks. The testing activities are aimed at verifying the correct functioning of the storage facility, in view of its expected start-up in October 2021.
This is a strategic project for Edison, through which it will create the first small-scale integrated LNG logistics chain in Italy, at the service of sustainable mobility in heavy and maritime transport, contributing to the achievement of the objectives set at European level to reduce CO2 and fine dust. In fact, there are many environmental advantages to using LNG compared to traditional fuels: it does not produce sulphur oxide (SOX) and particulate matter (PM) emissions, and can reduce nitrogen oxide (NOX) emissions by 80 to 90 per cent and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 20 to 30 per cent.
The Small Scale storage facility in Ravenna has a storage capacity of 20,000 cubic metres of LNG and, with an annual throughput of more than 1 million cubic metres of liquefied gas, will ensure the supply of at least 12,000 trucks and up to 48 ferries per year.
