Dominion Energy strengthens in US small-scale LNG

The US company Dominion Energy, based in Richmond (Virginia), which operates in the field of electricity and natural gas, recently expanded its activities in the small-scale LNG segment by acquiring from the Southern Company the producer Pivotal LNG of Atlanta particularly active in the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) for the maritime market.

Pivotal LNG's operations consist mainly of the Trussville LNG plant in Trussville (Alabama), and a 50% stake in the JAX LNG of Jacksonville, Florida, with the remaining 50% held by the NorthStar Midstream company of  Houston.

On the whole the two plants in Trussville and Jacksonville have a liquefaction capacity of 180,000 gallons/day and a storage capacity of 7 million gallons of LNG.

JAX LNG started its activity in May 2019 and is capable of loading both ships and tankers; it supplies the two vessels Isla Bella and Perla del Caribe (dual fuel TOTE Maritime container ships of 3,100 TEU each)  which operate between Jacksonville and San Juan (Puerto Rico), through the Clean Jacksonville barge specially built for ship-to-ship LNG bunkering.

In the next future, the JAX LNG plant could expand its production capacity to 480,000 gallons/day to meet the growing demand for LNG and double its storage capacity to 15 million gallons.

Dominion Energy Vice President for Gas Development Services, Roger Williams, said: "The acquisition of Pivotal LNG will play an important role in our strategy to help decarbonise the maritime industry, together with our Cove Point LNG facility in Maryland which allows us to lead the transformation of the maritime sector and to serve other growing LNG markets along the east coast.

Dominion Energy also owns the Cove Point LNG terminal on the Chesapeake Bay south of Baltimore (Maryland), with a nameplate capacity of 5.25 million tons/year, which started exporting LNG in April 2018 to Japan and India.
