Brittany Ferries has announced that it has signed a letter of intent (LOI) with Flensburger Schiffbau shipyard in Germany to build a new LNG-powered vessel.

The vessel will be 185 m long, 31 m in breadth, and capable of carrying up to 1680 passengers (257 passenger cabins). It will also have a vehicle capacity of 2600 lane metres (130 freight trailers, or 550 cars and 64 freight trailers).

The CEO of Brittany Ferries, Christophe Mathieu, said: “The signing of this letter of intent with the Flensburger shipyard is a concrete step towards the construction of a new generation of Brittany Ferries ships. Despite Brexit, we remain confident in our ability to continue to grow and modernise our route network, serving both tourism and trade in the regions of western Europe."

Construction is expected to commence in Spring 2017, following the signing of the final contract. Upon completion, the vessel will operate in 2019 on the Portsmouth-Caen, which offers three daily return sailings.
