After several years of experimentation with a first LNG powered bus put on the road in Thiruvanthapuram, capital of the Indian state of Kerala, Tata Motors, India's leading commercial vehicle manufacturer, delivered 4 new LNG powered buses that started the service.
Two of the new models, named Starbus LNG AC at 36, were assigned to the peroliferous company Petronet LNG in Dahej, Gujarat State, while the others were delivered at the LNG terminal in Kochi, Kerala. The ceremony of the latter delivery took place in the presence of the Minister of Transport of Kerala, Shri A K Saseendran, and representatives of Tata Motors and Petronet LNG Ltd.
Starbus LNG has been specially developed for the Indian market. The loading capacity of the LNG tank, 2.5 times greater than that of compressed natural gas, is able to ensure a distance of 600-700 kilometres with a refuelling. Tata Motors offers variants of the Starbus with 40 and 56 seats.
