The role of LNG Marine Fuel (LNG MFI), a non-profit association, unique in the Southern hemisphere, which promotes the use of liquid methane in maritime transport based in Perth, Australia, is growing. With the participation of Chart Industries, the industrial presence in the association is strengthened, which already includes, among others, the presence of Woodside, Wartsila, Ironside, Mitsubishi Motors, Man, Mol, Bhp, Rio Tinto, Win GD.
The goals of LNG MFI is to connect and activate the business plans of the member companies, filling the knowledge gaps necessary to break down barriers and provide a unified voice in support of members of the government. The association considers LNG as a primary marine fuel for the benefit of the nation, to grow the sector and reduce the country's environmental footprint.
Australia has rapidly developed large-scale LNG production and trade in recent years, especially towards Asia, significantly affecting the world market. Now the commitment is to take advantage of this new situation in the use of small-scale LNG especially in maritime transport.
Chart is a world leader in the cryogenic storage of LNG and manufacturer of other equipment and systems also in support of the construction of global and small-scale transport infrastructures, such as in tanks for trucks, of which it is one of the world's leading suppliers. In the maritime sector Chart built its first bunkering station in 2003 and recently completed the terminals in Klaipeda in Greece and Jacksonville, Florida (US). Chart also provides onboard power systems for LNG-powered ships and includes among its experiences the high-speed ferry Francisco, a catamaran ferry that operates between Buenos Aires and Montevideo.
LNG MFI CEO Margot Matthews said: “LNG MFI is excited to have Chart Industries come on board as our newest member,” Ms Matthews said. “LNG bunkering requires flexibility particularly in these early stages of development and Chart Industries has the experience we need in the design and installation of small scale LNG equipment and systems.”
