At the end of August, the company Medea Gas, Italgas operating company for the methanisation of the Sardinian city networks, communicated the trend of the activities, listing the municipalities already served by natural gas with small-scale deposits of LNG brought back from the liquid state to gas compressed via vaporizers.
Italgas, a leading company in the Italian methane distribution market, between 1918 and 1919 acquired 18 basins, corresponding to the same number of concessions, of the 33 into which the Sardinian territory was divided for the purpose of methanisation; the acquisition of basin 33 is also more recent. Completion of the planned interventions in basins 7 and 9 announced.
In particular, the activation of the plant in Sorso, a municipality in the Province of Sassari with about 14,500 inhabitants, was reported. The 31-kilometer network is powered by an LNG tank with a capacity of 110 cubic meters and by autumn it will also be connected to the nearby Municipality of Sennori, with 7,000 inhabitants.
Unlike the other Sardinian towns already served by natural gas through LNG deposits, where liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and propane air were already distributed, that of Sorso and soon Sennori, 22 kilometers long, are the first networks built from scratch and equipped with the most advanced technological solutions.
These networks, defined as "digital native", have in fact integrated sensors, remote control, in addition to the provision for the installation of optical fiber to support the company's activities, but also for the benefit of telecommunications operators. Similarly, the networks already present are also updated during the adaptation phase for methane distribution, including the installation of the most recent "smart meters".
Below is the list provided by Medea for the networks converted in basins 7, 9 and 22, which brings the number of Sardinian municipalities already served by methane to 22, accounting for the progress made between July and August with 8 new conversions and one new network. These municipalities were in fact 14 at the end of June, as reviewed by the REF-E consulting company, which publishes the semi-annual Small Scale LNG Watch update. Other municipalities are currently fueled with compressed methane cylinder wagons waiting to complete the installation of LNG systems.
Basin 7: Putifigari, Tissi, Cargeghe, Muros, Uri, Ossi, Usini and Ittiri; Basin 9: Ittireddu, Berchidda, Ozieri and Tula. Overall, 170 km of gas pipelines have been converted, now fed by 10 LNG tanks, for a total population of approximately 50,000 inhabitants. In basin 22, to be completed, the municipalities of Arzana, Elini, Escalaplano, Ilbono, Lotzorai, Perdasdefogu, Urzulei and Villagrande Strisaili are already served by methane. 92 converted km served by 7 LNG plants. This basin will be completed within the year.
At the end of last year, only the Quartu S. Elena network was active with LNG tank, promoted by ISGAS, the historic industrial gas distribution company of Cagliari. With the recent acquisition of ISGAS by Italgas, this plant also entered the Medea Gas portfolio.
Medea's assets in Sardinia comprise approximately 1,400 km of natural gas networks, two thirds of which are already in operation, approximately 250 km of LPG fueled networks in the process of conversion and approximately 600 km of propane-powered networks in the Municipalities of Cagliari, Sassari, Nuoro and Oristano, which will be converted to natural gas. The final customers currently served are approximately 50,000 with an expected growth of up to 150,000 in the next few years.
